night jobs: never happener (ep, 2022)

I picked up this EP at a local record store that does a 3 for $5 deal on their 7" records, and I've quickly put it on my regular rotation.

Night Jobs is a band that's clearly well-versed in both the classic Midwest Emo sound and the melodic hardcore classics. The A-side hints at a punk social consciousness with "Landlord", the opening track, and while the other three songs on this EP are more standard emo fare they're far from dull or cliche.

There's all the usual Midwest Emo stuff - lost love, alienation, large swathes of small-town nowhere that causes relationships of all kinds to be both deep and rare - but the decidedly punk edge goes beyond the usual frustration into bone deep anger that makes the screamo vocals come off as more immediate and justified than I usually find emo to be.

Definitely an EP and a band worth checking out for those who like their emo frantic, desperate, and real.
